Chapter Eight
Douglas had left her breakfast when she awoke the next morning, and Liddy ate before settling down with coffee and work. She wrote a letter to Madeline, not knowing when she'd take it to the village for posting. But she felt she had to tell her of the progress at the castle, the decision she'd come to.
She changed into a wool gown, put on her fur-lined boots and cape, and went out into the snow-white landscape in the afternoon. She saw him—wondering how he stood the cold, for he had no coat on as he walked the path up, toward the stables.
Meeting him there, she watched him hang a pail he'd used on a peg, and she entered after him, smelling the warm horseflesh and earth. She stroked her roan's nose, while he went down the stalls, seeing to the others that were not work horses, since those were at the opposite end.
When Douglas finished he was washing his hands in barrel, looking at her.
His boots were muddy the leather breeches dirty and his shirt the same, and yet as usual, she felt a bit breathless at all that brawn and earthy muss. It was unnatural how he affected her. Had it been any other man in dirt and sweat, she likely would have thought he needed a bath.
He didn't break the gaze as he came toward her drying his hands on the shirt tail he'd pulled loose, and she knew when he came close that he was thinking of their exchange, and thinking about that admitted attraction.
Though his hand touched the horse's nose, his thumb brushing hers, which had been there first, he was looking down at her, and strands of his deep burgundy hair had fallen over his brow.
"Ye finished yer work for the day then, have ye?” His tone was soft and deep, his light eyes moving over her hair and face.
"Yes. I decided I needed some air."
Those light blue eyes shifted to her mouth and back to meet hers. “The snow is slick and deep, not much for riding or walking in safely. But if ye have care to, Ill take ye up on the stud, for a quick ride."
"I should change."
"There's nae a need. I'll hold ye aright."
The way he said that had her wetting her lips, an act that didn't escape his gaze. But she nodded and stood back while he went to fetch the huge black stud she'd seen him ride before.
In the stable yard the animal flung its head and rolled its eyes, its massive hooves pawed the ground. But he spoke soothing in Gaelic, rubbing his hands over the mount. After saddling it, mounting, he reached a hand to Liddy.
She chuckled and stood upon a rock to reach it. He soon had her settled across his thighs and waited until she adjusted her coat.
"You weigh as nothing, lass.” He clucked softly to the stud, and soon they were riding out of the yard, down a path and cutting through the snow.
